Today on the blog, we catch up with Emily from Cannelle Medispa to delve behind the scenes of this great Oxfordshire independent business. A business that has stood the test of time by investing in their employees and building a great community of loyal customers. How did it all start? Let’s find out! >

TELL ME ABOUT WHY CANNELLE WAS SET UP.

France Baudet, an entrepreneur with no beauty background, started Cannelle Medispa in Summertown Oxford in 1997 with one beauty therapist and a short treatment menu. She recognised that whilst in France, beauty salons were abundant and treatments and wellbeing were seen as well deserved self-care, which should be taken regularly, in England beauty salons were few and far between and treatments like manicures, pedicures, facials and massage were seen as a ‘treat’. Over the years the client-base and team grew and France added new treatments based on advice from her therapists who had the beauty background she did not. It is this basis of sharing expertise, listening to staff and clients, trusting their knowledge and industry research which has built and continues to build such a successful solid business 20 years on.

Cannelle's opening in 1997

TELL ME ABOUT FRANCE’S BACKGROUND.

France was born and raised in the north of France and studied accountancy initially getting a job as book keeper / accountant in a small business. She went on to study business in Paris while working as a sales manager within the same small business after getting a promotion.
France left France to go to the USA in 1995. She then returned to Paris and moved to the UK in June 1996. As her English was not very good she volunteered at the Red Cross for almost a year. With improved English skills and an entrepreneurial passion France decided to create Cannelle Beauté (now Cannelle Medispa) in February 1997, opening the salon in December.

WHO ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS?

Our clients range from 16 years old to 90 years old. Around 10-15% of our clients are male and this is growing year on year. Most clients live locally to our Summertown salon but we also have clients who travel over 30 miles to come for some of the more advanced treatments like Laser Tattoo Removal and Laser Hair Removal.

WHAT TREATMENTS DO YOU OFFER?

We now offer a wide range of treatments from the more traditional core beauty treatments such as waxing, facials, manicures & pedicures, to the more intensive, long lasting Advanced Treatments such as Permanent Laser Hair Removal, Microneedling, Chemical Peels, Laser Resurfacing, Laser Tattoo Removal and Microblading. It is the combination of continuing to offer the traditional beauty treatments alongside meeting client demand for longer lasting more advanced anti-ageing and permanent solutions that makes Cannelle Medispa unique in the Oxford area.

TELL ME ABOUT CANNELLE’S SALONS.

In our Oxford based beauty salon we are a team of 11 employees with 11 treatment rooms and welcome over 1000 clients a month. Between our therapists we often complete over 1500 treatments a month. Our Henley salon is smaller but with equally strong, skilled and energetic therapists. Our team ensures that Cannelle Medispa provides a pristine, professional and restful environment for all clients. Our therapists train very hard not only in treatment and retail knowledge but also in client care and communications. Clients know when they visit our team they will be met with kindness and competence and feel very safe with all members of our team.

We are and always have been a diverse team each bringing our own cultural experiences and strengths. With 15 staff members from 10 different countries our salons are often buzzing with different languages from Italian & French to Polish & Turkish. Clients tell us they enjoy the diversity and positivity within our team which reflects Oxford and Henley’s international population.

In the beauty industry there is frequently a high turnover of staff but at Cannelle Medispa we have staff members who have been employed with us for 7-15 years. This creates a strong bond within our team and helps new employees who are often far from home. We support all staff in and out of work, from finding accommodation to encouraging confidence in their English language skills.

HOW HAS YOUR BUSINESS EVOLVED?

Cannelle Medispa has grown over the last 20 years from a small salon in Summertown with a single beauty therapist offering a limited range of beauty treatments to a large Medispa comprising 11 treatment rooms, employing 11 staff and a client base of over 7000. A second salon in Henley-on-Thames has thrived for over 15 years with three treatment rooms and 5 members of staff. With clients wanting ever more permanent results the decision to branch into offering laser and medical grade treatments was a successful one.

HOW DO YOU KEEP UP TO DATE WITH INDUSTRY CHANGES?

France has always added new treatments based on advice from her therapists who had the beauty background she did not. Industry Research is of course key to the development of any business but it is this basis of sharing expertise, listening to staff and clients, trusting their knowledge and industry research which has built and continues to build such a successful solid business 20 years on.

HOW DO YOUR TREATMENTS HELP WITH WELLBEING?

Our treatments help on all levels of wellbeing. Beauty therapy isn’t only about improving skin or the body from the outside. From teenagers who have lost their self confidence due to acne or acne scarring, to 40 year old men who are miserable about a tattoo mistake they made, or over worked, high functioning, multi tasking individuals who just need some relaxation and head space our spectrum of treatments helps everyone’s wellbeing.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PLANS FOR 2020.

2020 will see Cannelle Medispa develop further into the advanced treatments market offering more long lasting treatments for clients who want results quickly and more permanently. Last year we were crowned a Small Biz 100 winner which is a nationwide competition to find the best 100 local businesses across all industries. This year we hope to continue to do well in competitions that celebrate the huge contribution that independent businesses make not only to the country’s economy but to ensuring diversity on the high street.

France and Emily celebrating their win!

LASTLY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE INDEPENDENT BUSINESS IN OXFORDSHIRE?

France’s favourite independent business is definitely the patisserie Gatineau in Summertown, just around the corner from Cannelle Medispa.

Mmmm, a Cannelle massage and Gatineau cake sounds like a great afternoon of self care to me! If you need some more wellbeing inspiration in Oxfordshire, head over to our directory and select Health & Wellbeing.

Love,

Rosie

UK’S TOP ‘SMALL BIZ 100’ UNVEILED BY SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

A Beauty Salon in Summertown, Oxford has been selected as one of 100 trail-blazing small businesses in the official count-down to Small Business Saturday, which takes place across the UK on 7 December 2019.

Cannelle Medispa is one of this year’s ‘Small Biz 100’, a selection of small businesses drawn from every corner of the UK that reflect the vibrancy of the UK’s 5.6 million small businesses. In the 100 days running up to Small Business Saturday, the campaign will spotlight each of the Small Biz 100, as part of its mission to celebrate small business success and encourage the nation to 'shop local' and support British small businesses.

This year’s Small Biz 100 features a range of unique independent businesses each contributing to their communities and offering something different, including Cannelle Medispa, founded in 1997 by France Baudet. For over 20 years Cannelle Medispa has offered high quality beauty therapy to the people of Oxfordshire and the Summertown salon has expanded to 11 treatment rooms employing 11 therapists. In recent years the demand for more permanent results has meant that Cannelle now also offers advanced aesthetic treatments such as laser hair removal, non-surgical facelift treatments, skin resurfacing, Chemical Peels and Laser Tattoo Removal as well as the traditional beauty treatments.

Cannelle Medispa joins hundreds of previous Small Biz 100 businesses, which have been announced by the iconic campaign since its UK launch in 2013.

Day one of the Small Biz 100 count-down kicks off with The Butchers Social, from Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire, with Cannelle Medispa being placed in the spotlight on Friday 22nd November, where it will be celebrating by offering clients and local businesses special discounts, local nibbles and wines, a pre-xmas shopping sale on skincare products and vouchers and a grand prize draw.

France Baudet, Founder of Cannelle Medispa said:

“I am absolutely thrilled to be one of the 100 Small Biz winners. For over two decades we have enjoyed the salon buzzing with lovely clients and like all local businesses we have endured the ups and the downs that comes with developing and expanding a business. To be recognised as a Small Biz 100 winner is very exciting, we are proud to be alongside some fantastic businesses from all across the UK’

Director of Small Business Saturday, Michelle Ovens MBE said:

“Each year this campaign has grown in support from government, business and communities alike, and so we can’t wait to begin the annual 100-day countdown to Small Business Saturday with the launch of the Small Biz 100 2019.

Small Business Saturday’s increasing popularity means it was harder than ever to choose just 100 of this country’s incredible 5.6 million small businesses to showcase, but we believe those we have chosen are true representatives of the diverse, creative and inspiring heroes at the heart of our communities.”

In its seventh year, Small Business Saturday is the UK's most successful small business campaign, which last year saw an estimated £812 million spent in small businesses across the UK on the day, according to research commissioned by founder and principal supporter American Express.

This was up from the £748 million spent on Small Business Saturday in 2017, with 59% of people aware of the day saying they spent more than usual.

The #SmallBizSatUK campaign trended in the UK top 5 on Twitter on the day, reaching over 100 million people globally.

The Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Mayor of London were among those publicly supporting the campaign, alongside more than 90% of local councils.

Small Business Saturday also benefits from the backing of leading business organisations including the Federation of Small Businesses, Indeed and Dell. The campaign is also supported by Amazon, printed.com, Square and Xero.

Small Business Saturday 2019 is open to all businesses to participate in and will commence its regional bus tour roadshow across the UK during the autumn, to drum up further support.

Summertown Beauty Business Wins Best Beauty Salon 2016

Summertown Beauty Business Wins
Best Beauty Salon 2016

Our beauty salon based in Summertown, Oxford has won best Beauty Salon in Oxon and Bucks for the second year running.

Cannelle Beauty was started in Summertown, Oxford twenty years ago by French business woman France Baudet who moved to England with the dream of bringing French beauty therapy to Britain. It has grown from a single therapist with one treatment room to 11 treatment rooms employing 15 members of staff with a second salon in Henley-on-Thames.

For two decades France Baudet has seen her business flourish even through the tough recession years of 2008 onwards her focus has remained the same. “My aim was to share the French obsession with well-being and beauty salons in England! Twenty years on we have two salons, over 4000 regular clients, 20% of whom are male” France continues “When I moved to England back in 1997 beauty salons and hollistic well-being were already a regular part of many women’s regular routine in France. In the UK however facials, professional skincare, body treatments, manicures and pedicures were still seen as a one off treat. In Oxford there was only one existing salon when I arrived, in France a town of that size would have had four or five. I brought the French passion, quality products and specialised knowledge to create a small world of French beauty in Oxford that people could enjoy and benefit from regularly.”

This year Cannelle Beauty has stormed to first place beating scores of other beauty salons in a competition to find the best of Oxfordshire's businesses, run by National journalist (Independent on Sunday, Observer, Red, Marie Claire, Elle, The Telegraph) Hero, whose blog Muddy Stilettos is followed by fifty thousand people across the UK. In 2015 Cannelle Beauty also won Best Beauty Salon in the Oxon and Bucks area.

Muddy Stiletto’s Hero said:

The French flair is a beautiful part of Cannelle and a fabulous investment in Oxfordshire lifestyles. As well as standard facials, manicures & pedicures they have exceptional expertise and experience in more advanced treatments such as laser hair removal, skin tightening, rejuvenation and fixing skin problems.Muddy Stiletto's

Muddy Stilettos, ‘The Urban Guide to the Countryside’ is the biggest lifestyle blog in Bucks and Oxon with over 20,000 discerning followers. It is the creation of ex journalist (previous work includes Independent on Sunday, Observer, Red, Marie Claire, Elle, The Telegraph) Hero whose witty, honest and upbeat reviews reveal the very best of local businesses in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

The award nominations ran between March 9th and April 29th with voting in 28 different categories including best Beauty Salon, Best Restaurant and best Theatre to name a few.

France Baudet, owner and director of Cannelle beauty was thrilled at the result. “It was a very tense few days as we could watch the percentage increase and decrease for each of the five beauty salon finalists as people cast their votes. Having been established in Oxford and Henley for over 17 years I have a wonderful and loyal clientbase and I am extremely grateful to everyone who voted. And of course above all to my staff, my brilliant therapists whose high standards and training create the unique world of Cannelle Beauty that clients want to step into.”

France and Muddy Stiletto’s Hero have enjoyed learning from each other. Hero has tried treatments she never thought she would experience including anti-ageing skin tightening and callus peeling and France is intrigued by the power of social media sites and blogging that never existed when she first opened her salon in Summertown, Oxford back in 1997.

Cannelle Beauty beats the competition to win the Best Beauty Salon category in the Muddy Stilettos Awards 2015.

Now, over 17 years on France has two salons, 14 treatment rooms (11 in Oxford, 3 in Henley) employing a total of 18 staff and enjoys researching new treatments that offer clients the very best in beauty therapy and non surgical anti ageing procedures.
